We spoke to author Jane Holland about how she wrote this exciting, fast-paced new suspense novel, and what inspired it, and she told us:

“In June 2024, I visited Brittany – and Carnac, in particular – on a mum-daughter touring trip around France with my eldest daughter. I loved the white sand beaches, the wild scent of the Atlantic, the history of the salt marshes there, and the enchanted tales of the forest of Broceliande, rather further inland. We visited the museum in old Carnac and loved their amazing exhibits both about the early excavations of the menhirs and Neolithic tombs in the area, and how things changed at the museum during and after World War Two.

Some of these stories were deeply inspiring for me, especially those around the museum packing up and removing the most important artefacts before enemy occupation to save them from being taken to Germany. That fascinating historical fact ended up acting as a launchpad for the story behind The Brittany Tree. The wonderful landscape – the mysterious Neolithic stones of Carnac and the vast forests around Paimpont, known colloquially as Broceliande, and much associated with Arthurian myth and legend – feeds into the story and forms an atmospheric background to my characters’ lives.

Since that summer, I’ve had almost wall-to-wall novels on my To Be Written schedule, with very little space for anything else. But in early 2026, this interesting idea finally worked its way to the top of that list, and I wrote it very quickly, as the story had been percolating for a long time. That’s given it a fast pace, and I hope a sense of urgency that will carry readers forward from the first page…”
